The main active ingredient in Crestor is Rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin became the sixth cholesterol lowering "statin" drug on the U.S. market when it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 13, 2003. Rosuvastatin is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in your blood.The other members of the statin family are atorvastatin (LIPITOR), fluvastatin (LESCOL), lovastatin (MEVACOR), pravastatin (PRAVACHOL), and simvastatin (ZOCOR). These drugs are only approved to be used along with a low-cholesterol diet and an exercise program to lower cholesterol.

Crestor, a member of a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs commonly referred to as “statins,” was approved in the U.S. in August 2003, based on review of an extensive clinical database involving approximately 12,000 patients.
